I have stayed at the Miyako Hotel before. Once we arrived we werenâ™t sure about the area, but the part of downtown LA that the Miyako is in has been cleaned up and isnâ™t that bad. The immediate surrounding area is actually very cute.
I work in the area by the hotel and Little Tokyo (City Hall). At first glance, it may look a little sketchy, but in reality, it's a fine, fun and interesting neighborhood. You'll find shops, restaurants, and markets there that you can't find anywhere else outside Japan. However, if you have a choice, and want to have a more typical "L.A. experience" I just wouldn't recommend staying downtown altogether. You won't get the "L.A. feel." Like I said, it's nice, but it's not like the rest of LA, and it's farther from the Westside of the City - the area that most tourists think of when they think of L.A.
Downtown is very nice nowadays. I live down the street from the Miyako and never hear a peep out of my neighbors. BTW, that's Little Tokyo in that area.
