When you check into a hotel, do they tell you your room number?

I work at a hotel & today this lady got mad at me for telling her what room she was in for security reasons which i can understand, but what am I supposed to do, just point to the number? I have always said your going to be in room _____, in all the time that I have worked here. Wouldn't just pointing to the room number be rude? If you work at a hotel or go to hotels alot let me know what u do. Do they tell you the room number out loud? I say yes but you let me know.

I travel alone, but normally stay within a group reservation. But I do not like it when my room # is announced either. You never know who is listening. It's even more dangerous for hotels w/o security or good security or outside rooms, instead of interior rooms.

Just write it down on the car the key card is put in and point to it. If someone asks why you aren't telling them, but pointing, tell them you are doing it for security reasons so no one else knows your room #. That will usually keep most people quiet, but in this day and age, I doubt you will find it a problem.

Just simply say, this is your room #, and then point it on the hotel map so she knows where to go - don't say the # out loud and you'll be fine. If your hotel hasn't adopted this policy yet, why not suggest it. It may earn you some kudos with the boss/supervisor too.

Every time I have stayed at a hotel, motel, campground, resort, etc. they have outloud told me my room number, with and without others around. I understand her concerns with identity thieft these days, but it was completely out of line for her to be upset and act out if she did. No place on her contract with your company has she signed her privacy rights legally. You are not disclosing any person identifying numbers, just her name and room number, it isn't like you annonced her social security, phone, address, etc on the loud speaker and published it. She needs to get over it and you can continue your job the way you are doing it, unless management tells you otherwise and notifies you of a change in practice.

Most hotels have card swipe systems. They program the card code when they give you your card. They slide the card into a little envelope or folder and write the room number on that rather than say it outloud. You can explain this to your manager that most do it this way for security reasons. Let the manager decide how it is to be delt with from now on.

I can't remember checking in where the hotel staff didn't tell me my room number! I, frankly don't understand her concern. Are there people just hanging around the check in area waiting to hear room numbers??? If you are staying at a place where there are creeps hanging around the check in area I would recommend changing hotels. You have bigger problems than someone hearing your room number!! Come on - I understand the need for heightened security but this is ridiculous!!

I see nothing you did wrong. Talk with your manager for future references. However I always ask and where is that room at so I dont know what the person's problem was unless they were a little pharanoid. Dont let that get you down. Maybe when you give them the key point to the # on the key.
