I simutaneously agree and disagree with some of the previous respondents.
First, you certainly won't find a hotel directly in Times Square for as little as $250 . . . it will be at least $400 for New Year's Eve, and prices as high as $600 aren't unheard of.
Second -- and this is the GOOD news -- it IS possible to find rooms for New Year's Eve. It's true that Times Square hotels sell out a year in advance for that date, but they do get the occasional cancellation. What's more, they often hold back 'reserve' rooms for VIPS and their regular customers. If those don't sell, they can be yours.
The Marriott is directly across from where the ball drops, and will probably be the hardest (and most expensive) to get into. I'd try the Westin, which is just a few blocks away, or the Rennaisance.
Good luck and Happy Travels!

not this yr--they book 1-2 yrs in advance~~~
The New York Marriott Marquis is right on Times Square (45th Street and Broadway).
Though like the other poster said...this year FORGET IT! Though if you want to book now for New Years 2009, do it now.
Chances are pretty low now mate.
But give it a try, here's a list of hotels in TS.

The hotels in New York that are very close within eyesight of the ball drop are usually sold out by now and are very pricey.
Some of the hotels are Marriott Marquis, W Hotel (Blue Fin, great restaurant but very trendy and pricey sits under it), The Time Hotel, Casablanca Hotel, the Paramount, Doubletree, are just a few that come to mind.
You can forget about it this year. The hotels in Times Square get booked about a year in advance for New Year's eve. AND they are ridiculously expensive. I just met someone who stayed in Times Square 2 weeks ago and one night cost $250. I'm sure they hike up the price for January 31st.
